Upon arrival, your guide will meet you at Kidepo Airstrip and accompany you to your accommodation, with an exciting game drive along the way. Kidepo National Park is situated in the semi-arid northern region of Uganda, making it one of the country's most isolated and least visited parks. Located 700km from Kampala, it is a challenging 10-hour drive, but easily accessible with a one-hour domestic flight from Entebbe. Known as "True African Wilderness," Kidepo Valley National Park is celebrated for its exceptional wildlife, including four of the Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants, and buffaloes), as well as a variety of other animals like cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, and ostriches. The park boasts approximately 77 mammal species and over 476 bird species, such as the little green bee-eater, northern carmine bee-eater, ostrich, and secretary bird. The savanna plains and the Kidepo / Narus rivers, though affected by high temperatures, especially during peak seasons, still support wildlife with wild remnant pools as crucial water sources. Beyond its wildlife, Kidepo offers a rich cultural experience, home to indigenous tribes like the Karamojong, Acholi, Masai from Kenya, and the IK tribe. Accommodation options in Kidepo Valley National Park. Kidepo National Park does not have so many options inside the park but you will find various guesthouses and lodges around the park offering affordable and comfortable stays. These places are ideal for visitors wanting to experience wildlife and scenery without high costs.
    Luxury – Apoka Lodge
Apoka Safari Lodge is the only luxury accommodation nestled in the heart of Kidepo National Park's African wilderness, is a luxurious lodge renowned for its major location overlooking the Narus River. The spacious rooms feature large beds with draped mosquito nets, woolen carpets on the floors, and ensuite showers with 24-hour running water. Each room also boasts a private veranda where you can unwind after your day's adventures, enjoying a refreshing drink. Because Apoka Safari Lodge is situated within the park, you will encounter wildlife on your journey to the lodge. Feel free to ask your guide to pause for photo opportunities along the way.
    Mid-range – Kidepo Savannah Lodge
Kidepo Savannah Lodge is situated right next to Kalokudo gate, just a stone's throw from the park entrance. • Day 3: Morning Nature walk. Afternoon Game drive.
Kidepo Valley National Park boasts stunning wilderness with breath-taking scenery, perfect for capturing unforgettable photos and memories. After a delicious breakfast, start your day with a nature walk during the early morning hours. Explore the savannah plains, wander along the riverbanks, and climb atop metamorphic rocks. You may encounter cheetahs, lions, leopards, hyenas, giraffes, ostriches, elephants, and numerous other mammals and bird species. The expansive panoramic views of Kidepo are truly spectacular, engaging you in the wild, open savannah environment. Return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation before heading out for an afternoon game drive. Follow designated trails on the game drive to seek out wildlife in Kidepo Valley National Park, including lions, leopards, elephants, hippos, and over 77 other mammal species such as greater kudu, Chandler's mountain reedbuck, and bush pigs. The park is also home to cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, ostriches, and over 476 bird species like the little green bee-eater, northern carmine bee-eater, ostrich, and secretary bird. These can be found across the savanna plains and along the Kidepo and Narus rivers. Game drives can be done both in the morning, witnessing nature awaken with animals preparing for their daily routines, and in the evening as animals return to their resting places. Due to the park's dry conditions, animals move frequently in search of water. After the game drive, return to the lodge for dinner and spend the night surrounded by the Serenity of the wilderness.
  • Day 4: Visiting the IK tribe
Wake up early for breakfast and prepare for a full-day artistic and cultural visit to the IK people. You will embark on a hike to the scenic Morungole Mountains near Kidepo Valley Park. The IK people are a small community numbering between 10,000 to 11,000. They are believed to have originally come from Ethiopia, settled in Kenya, and later migrated to their current home in Kidepo Valley Park. Upon reaching the villages, you will receive a warm welcome with traditional dances and songs. Tourism plays a crucial role in the community, providing income and supporting the tribe's sustainability, much like it does for the Batwa people in southwest Uganda. During your guided tour of the village, feel free to ask about the Ik people's way of life, which includes collaborative child-rearing, polygamy as part of the family structure, and an informal education focused on survival skills. Accessing the Ik village is challenging, but a trail marked by the US Forest Service has made it somewhat easier. There is a path where you need to use the vehicle partially, but the journey remains an adventurous hike up and down steep mountains, guided by interpreters who speak the Ik language. Climbing to the peak of Mount Morungole, which stands at 2,749 meters, requires physical fitness, as the 8-kilometer trail (16-kilometer round trip) is demanding. It's a rewarding experience, offering insights into a unique culture and breathtaking views along the way.
  • Day 5: Drive back to Entebbe from Kidepo Valley National Park. It is a full-day drive. Overnight in Entebbe
The drive to Entebbe will take the entire day, offering a captivating journey. Prepare to experience the African massage enroute, and make sure to wake up early to avoid traffic jams. As you travel, you will pass through beautiful communities, valleys, and hills, with fields of food plantations lining the route. Children playing in their yards may wave and call out "MZUNGU," which means "white person." You can wave back or offer them sweets, but giving money is discouraged to avoid fostering a begging habit. Feel free to ask your driver to stop for photos or restroom breaks along the way. You will have a packed lunch from your accommodation, or you can stop for a hot meal en route. Once you reach Entebbe, check into your room and relax before dinner.
  • Day 6: Transfer back to Entebbe International Airport for your international departure flight.
    End of services.

5It was a very peaceful and calm sailing with Sofia, my skipper for the day. The wind was a bit weak initially but it really picked up when we were sailing back. Sofia is very active and an excellent skipper and a very good guide and pointed lot of different types of boats to me, the meaning of the horns. The island we went to was hilly and a very small beach and we had a good lunch there.

4The experience was great, there was a lot to see. A few comments, 1. The audio was quite soft at times so I could not hear the commentary and history but the audio I could hear was entertaining and well read 2. Different drivers give different service so if you do not have a map it is easy to miss spots. I recommend having a sign/audio in the bus that tells you which stop you are at

5We LOVED this tour. Our group’s ages range from 18-26 and the tour was perfect for us. It is somewhat physically challenging but if you are in decent shape, it’s manageable and so worth it! Their team gives you all the gear you need (wetsuits, shoes, helmets, life jackets, etc) so all we brought was a swimsuit and a towel. This has been the favorite activity of our group so far on our travels.
